Review of Affair at Boreland Springs
LYONESSE ARDGILLAN BALBRIGGAN CO DUBLIN
Dear Kay,
Thank you so much for sending me a copy of Affair at Boreland Springs. I thoroughly enjoyed ill Feel free to use any or all of the following comments in any way that will help this good book to reach a wider audience.
As a debut novel, Affair at Boreland Springs is outstanding. Writing of a place and people you know, you bring a remarkable freshness of characterization. The plot line is solid and convincing. You have a fine eye for detail without ever losing sight of the larger picture.
By depicting Boreland Springs as a remote, largely self sufficient and almost idyllic microcosm, you subtly demonstrate the true ghastliness of the Great Depression. Overwhelmed by massive forces beyond their comprehension, people throughout America suffered on a massive scale while Melia and Sil went on living their own narrowly focused lives, coping with intimate tragedies which were every bit as
important.
In Ireland we say, "All politics is parochially". Individual lives are, too: narrowly focused, seen up close. Affair at Boreland Springs illustrates this so beautifully.
During the economic crisis which is now sweeping the world, your book serves is a cogent reminder of what life is really about.
Congratulations!
